Cephalotes pallens

  Cephalotes pallens to gatunek występujący w Ameryce Południowej i Środkowej. Północna granica zasięgu obejmuje Meksyk zaś południowa sięga do północnych rejonów Argentyny. Jako miejsce do gniazdowania wybierają puste w środku gałęzie i liany często wysoko w koronach drzew. Cephalotes pallens podobnie jak większość gatunków z tego rodzaju ma wyraźny podział na kastę robotnicy i żołnierza. Głównym zadaniem żołnierzy jest zamykanie wejścia do gniazda własną głową, która wyglądem przypomina eliptyczne wieko. Takie zachowanie utrudnia wtargnięcie do kolonii tych mrówek i utrudnia lokalizację kolonii. Głowa królowej ma podobną budowę do głowy żołnierzy i najprawdopodobniej służy do tego samego celu zanim w kolonii pojawi się pierwszy żołnierz.

  Cephalotes pallens is a species found in South and Central America. The northern boundary of the range covers Mexico and the southern reaches the northern regions of Argentina. They choose hollow branches and lianas, often high in the treetops, as nesting places. Cephalotes pallens, like most species of this genus, has a clear division into the worker and soldier caste. The main task of the soldiers is to close the entrance to the nest with their own head, which looks like an elliptical lid. Such behavior makes it difficult to intrude into the colony of these ants and makes it difficult to locate the colony. The queen’s head is similar in structure to that of soldiers and most likely serves the same purpose before the first soldier appears in the colony.
